Special Keynote: Complex Challenges Require Bold Solutions: The Nursing Workforce

In this special keynote, Dr. Peter Buerhaus and Dr. Linda Aiken will engage in a lively fireside chat, facilitate by Ms. Deneen Richmond, to explore the current state of the nursing workforce, the factors that have led us to where we are today (including recent events such as the pandemic), and more importantly, how they envision the profession and our broader systems evolving to ensure we have a nursing workforce that will be able to provide equitable access to care. Ultimately, attendees will be encouraged to think critically about possible policy solutions that the Academy and lawmakers should advance at the local, state, or federal level.

With the astounding rise in gun violence and racially-motivated acts of violence, the health care community must advance policies that support and protect communities from its devastating impact. From schools, to grocery stores, to places of worship, violence, and in particular racially-motivated acts of violence, have increased in the past two years. Racism has long been a determinant of health and must be considered when crafting policy. This panel will explore nurses' voice in enacting policy to eradicate the devastation violence causes to one’s mental, emotional, and physical health.
