Susan McMullan is an Associate Professor and Director of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing BSN-DNP Nurse Anesthesia Pathway.
Dr. McMullan’s career has been dedicated to active support of the UAB mission to improve individual and population health and equity. Her work to change policy to allow Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) to practice to their full scope of education and training ensures that people who live in medically underserved/rural communities across the nation will receive the best health care. Greatly increasing the numbers of practicing CRNAs during a critical anesthesia workforce shortage is one example of her efforts to close this gap. Dr. McMullan’s work on behalf of Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), a profession with over 150 years of documented safe care, to ensure CRNAs are the preferred providers nationally is yet another example of this critical work to expand access to care. Finally, as a member of the executive board of the National Board of Certification/Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA), a leader in advanced practice nursing credentialing, she will continue developing policies for innovative processes for lifelong learning for CRNAs thus ensuring patients continue to receive the high quality, safe, and cutting-edge care they deserve.
Dr. McMullan holds a PhD from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, an MSN from Rush University College of Nursing, and a BSN from The University of Michigan.
