Jen-Jiuan Liaw is a Professor at the School of Nursing, National Defense Medical Center. Dr. Liaw has dedicated her career to nursing practice, education, and research for more than 30 years. Dr. Liaw’s studies demonstrated that providing atraumatic treatments, such as oral sucrose, breast milk odor/taste, nonnutritive sucking, and facilitated tucking, are an alternative to pharmaceutical anesthesia, and can reduce infants’ pain/stress, and improve sleep and developmental outcomes. These methods have influenced the development of guidelines and policies for management of short-term pain in infants and have been cited by numerous authors worldwide.

Dr. Liaw has obtained continuous grant funding from the national government for her research, which has filled a significant gap in knowledge regarding how outcomes can be improved for high risk newborn infants.
