Candace Knight is an Associate Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing, where she is the Director and Nurse Supervisor for the Nurse Family Partnership of Central Alabama. She also teaches maternal child health nursing in the undergraduate and accelerated master’s program at UAB. She has over 25 years of experience in maternal child health nursing, labor and delivery, and childbirth education.
Dr. Knight’s areas of expertise include perinatal stress and its impact on pregnancy and birth outcomes as well as social determinants of health. Her current work relates to maternal child health and academic-community partnerships. In her role as Director of Nurse Family Partnership of Central Alabama, she has overseen the initial implementation and expansion of the agency in seven counties, from an initial caseload of 50 clients five years ago to over 250 currently served. The outcomes generated by the Nurse Family Partnership of Central Alabama team under Dr. Knight’s direction have impacted the mental and physical health of these families in a profound way, improving the preterm birth, breastfeeding, and employment rates of these clients to a rate better than the state and county levels even among statistically disadvantaged women while providing a robust clinical experience for interdisciplinary students. Dr. Knight holds a PhD and BSN from The University of Alabama at Birmingham.
